Glass Column with Splitter Section

Precision Borosilicate 3.3 Column with Integrated Reflux Splitter

The Glass Column with Splitter Section manufactured by Goel Glass is an engineered distillation and absorption column component designed for fractional distillation, continuous solvent recovery, and pilot-scale chemical purification. Combining a heavy-walled Borosilicate Glass 3.3 column cylinder with an internal liquid reflux divider and vapor chimney, it delivers accurate, reproducible control over reflux-to-distillate ratios under atmospheric or deep vacuum conditions.

Operating Principle of the Splitter Section

During distillation, rising vapors pass upward through the central vapor riser chimney to the overhead condenser. Condensed distillate drains down into an internal collection basin equipped with a magnetically balanced, swinging PTFE or glass diversion funnel. An external electromagnetic coil actuated by a digital reflux timer generates cyclic magnetic pulses that tilt the funnel between two defined discharge channels:

  • Reflux Position: Condensed liquid discharges centrally through an internal distributor nozzle back onto the packed column bed, maximizing mass transfer stages and separation efficiency.
  • Take-Off Position: Condensed liquid flows directly out through the side branch nozzle into downstream distillate coolers and product receivers.
Key Engineering Advantages
  • Complete Process Visibility: Transparent Borosilicate 3.3 body allows direct visual observation of vapor-liquid contact, reflux flow rates, weeping, and potential column flooding.
  • Hermetic Magnetic Operation: Magnetic actuation through the glass wall eliminates moving mechanical seals, gland packings, and potential atmospheric leak paths under full vacuum.
  • Near-Universal Acid & Solvent Resistance: Inert contact surfaces (pure Borosilicate Glass 3.3 and virgin PTFE) resist aggressive organic solvents, halogenated compounds, and mineral acids without metallic leaching.
  • Smooth Hygienic Construction: Mirror-smooth glass surfaces resist fouling and product adherence, facilitating fast Clean-In-Place (CIP) turnarounds.

Your frequently asked question

Glass columns with Borosilicate glass construction have a smooth surface that permits easy cleaning and prevents fouling. Regular cleaning is recommended to maintain optimal performance and prevent contamination.

Glass columns made of Borosilicate glass are almost universally resistant to corrosion, making them suitable for handling a wide range of chemicals without the risk of contamination. This resistance adds to their durability and versatility in various applications.

Yes, columns can be supplied with packing supports made of fused glass rods or PTFE perforated plates. For column packing, we provide Borosilicate column packing including Raschig rings and Pall rings. We also provide all necessary couplings, adaptors, and PTFE gaskets to connect glass components together as well as interface glass components with metallic equipment.
